A/C on 85-89 truck or 4Runner

I am considering one of these trucks as a daily driver, however I can't seem to find one around here with working A/C, and life here in the deep South isn't worth living without air. Were the AC units weak on these trucks? Has anyone swapped one from R12 to 134?
Thanks
Rick

I'm running 134 in my 87. Had to replace the condenser after the hood latch put a hole in it. Works great for the AZ summers.
