I have a '81 running 35x12.5 Xterrains that are almost toast. Loved them in the deep stuff but found them to be rather squirrley on the packed snow/ice around town. The lateral traction was lacking, though, my heavy foot and detroit rear was the cause of some of that.

Looking at the goodyear mtr-k's and bfg km2's or any others that work. Would go with the duratracks but they don't come in 35's and i'm running 5.29 gears so 33's are out of the question. Truck mostly sees winter use when things get rough in town and to get up forrest roads backpacking/snowshoeing and occaisional wheelin.

duratracks come in a 35. But you need 16" rims. Look for the 315/75/16.

 

I don't like my km2s in the rain very much, but I am also on 33x10.5s. I'm definitely going with the mtr next time around

 

I love my bighorns in the snow. I wasn't to impressed by MTR"s in the snow I have a few friends with them.

 

IMO dura tracs are hands down my favorite all around tire. Great on packed snow/ice. Does very well in mud and rocks. And have good road manners and wear nicely with higher mileage. I'd also look into the Cooper mt series tires.

 

x3 on the Duratracs. It's what I have on the cruiser in 315/75/16. Had some additional siping done too, but no studs. The center of the tread packs with snow pretty well for good traction on the road and the open shoulder paddles through the deep stuff. The ice traction is pretty impressive for such a big tire, but the 80 does put a few more psi on the ground than your truck will. You could get them studded to do a little better on ice, but then you'll be sliding around every time it rains.

The Maxxis Bighorns, Toyo MTs, and Cooper STTs are good choices too.

 

I ran a set of Toyo MT's that I hated in the snow,

Rode shotgun on a couple of snow runs with a 4Runner using the Goodear Kevlar MTR's that I ended up getting a set..Now i wish I had sucked it up and got a set of 16" rims and the Duratracs...I took the Kevlar MTR's back and had them swapped out for another set. America's tires rebalanced them 2-3 times...the 2nd set is better butt still no feel right to me...

edit: when I was stationed in Alaska a set of BFG AT's that were a great all around winter tire, good manners in the deep stuff and winter road conditions..

 

My km2's are ok in the snow but not so much on packed snow/ice, thinking about siping them as some have done but not sure? Anyhoo.

 

Haven't seen snow yet, but they have been great in everything I've thrown at them. They're heavy, so took more weight than I'd hoppes to balance them, but they run smoothly down the freeway up to 75 mph.

 

I forgot about this thread! I ended up getting a set of Dick Cepec FC2's (35x12.5R15) and have been really happy with them so far. Great road manners and they seem pretty quiet to me. I can't hear them over the engine. The white stuff should start flying around here pretty soon so I'll post up a review here after I've had a chance to put them through their paces in full winter conditions. I put them on at the tail end of winter last year and didn't get a good test, but the little bit of snow they saw they handeled well.
