OEM remanufactured starter grinding noise?
'87 4Runner Auto tranny 4x4 . The starter was shot. Went to local Toyota dealer ordered reman starter from them. They asked was it a 1.0kw or 1.4kw. I hadn't a clue which one it was all stickers an/or numbers were off the original starter. They told me both would fit. I gave them the core when I ordered the reman one so I could not compare the 2. After installing the 1.4kw it starts fine but right after engine starts i hear a loud grinding noise. I would assume its from the starter. It never made the noise before. What's the difference between the 1.0 and the 1.4 starters. What happening, used the same hardwear. New battery, new cables. Should I have got the 1.0kw. I gave the dealer my vin number. The parts guy said the 1.4 is a little longer than the 1.0.

The 1.4 is a harsh climate (cold/north) option that was installed on vehicles sold in cold climates. Should work fine. However, any knowledgeable dealer should have been able to give you the EXACT part based on your VIN. I wonder if they know WTH they're doing....
The grinding is another issue. It SOUNDS like the solenoid might not be disengaging, but that's just a guess. Would it be possible to post a video?

That's definitely the solenoid not disengaging. I'd go back to the dealer & let them have a listen.

Not again, yep, got a 2nd starter from Toyota and it makes the same sound. I also noticed when I removed the second one that the teeth looked smoth as if they were hitting the fly wheel. I'm thinking I need to put a couple extra washers on the bolts and shim out the starter just a little. BTW I bench tested the starter myself and it checked out just as the Toyota manual said. It's not defected. Any extra thoughts will help.

I don't know if the fly wheel was replaced. I could I tell? The starter I took off originally was a Denso. Weird. If it is a non standard then what ? Ya, I'm confused . I'm going to see if they still have the old core and see how they size up.
