I know basic stuff about these trucks but I am having a friend who owns a mechanic shop do a pre purchase inspection on the truck this Wednesday. What key things should i have him check so I dont get stuck having to repair it shortly down the road. I've heard its good to know if the timing belt has been changed. But other than that I don't know what to direct their attention to. Here's the general specs on the truck.

1997 ext. cab 2.7l 4x4 5spd. (lx model if that matters)

I got to take it for a long test drive, up to 60mph, tested 4 high and low on a gravel road, all seemed in working order. I really liked the manual hubs since I am used to older vehicles. Clutch was good, breaks good, steering tight etc.

Any common problems to get checked out would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

 

Check compression, valve clearance, and check for a cracked exhaust manifold.
The 2.7 has a timing chain that is considered a lifetime part so no need to worry about that.

 

I thought it was a belt not a chain on these trucks? Lemme know which it is :0)

 

The 2.7 has a chain and the 3.4 has a belt. Could have searched and found that answer.
