95 4Runner speedometer, odometer, trip not working

My 95 4runner speedometer, odometer, and trip meter do not work. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to diagnose the problem. If there is already a thread about it that would be great, or just what to check first. I looked through some threads already but not finding what I am looking for.

Thanks

Did you try searching for, oh, I don't know, "Speedometer not working"?

Your most likely problem is a failed VSS1 sensor. It plugs into the back of the transfer case. The bad news is that the part is $300+, and to test it requires skill and equipment you're not likely to have.

As a first step, I'd remove the one bolt holding the sensor, ease it out (don't wreck the o-ring), and then spin it with someone watching your speedo (you can just run the gear down your arm, but if you must, use a drill motor). If that works, your electronics are good and the problem is inside the transfer case.

But your most likely problem with this cluster of symptoms is the sensor itself.

Good luck!

I did actually, but what you gave me was the information I was looking for. Thank you.

I have been searching the whole day for the sensor. I am unable to find any information or images of where the sensor is. Does anyone have a quick description or help me out?

Thanks

thanks for that info!!! even though you started off being a...i have this same issue and google fu brought me here as one of the top results, keep that in mind when you're telling people to gfo and use the search function, the world is bigger than our little forums...this was one of the only relevant results in the first 5 pages for "4runner speedometer tachometer dead", thanks again! i had no idea it was a sensor i'm just used to the cheezy plastic speedo gears in the NPxxx series of jeep t-cases and such!
