i have a 92 4runner, 6 cyl. working on replacing the powersteering pump and i'm stuck at the pulley removal. the pulley is solid, no holes in it to wedge a wrench into or anything. the genius that designed the mount made the bolt too long to remove with the pulley on.

no matter how tight i adjust the belt, the pulley slips when i wrench on the bolt. i have tried to wedge a wrench in between the pulley and belt, but no luck.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

Do you by chance have room to get on the nut with a impact wrench.

Don`t have one of those engines in front of me Right now so I don`t remember where the pump mounts.

If you have all ready loosened the bracket bolts that might be why it won`t break loose.

Can you pry down on the belt with out breaking anything .

Not to be smart but you are turning the correct way??

 

I had to take a cold chisel and split the nut on mine. It had obviously not been moved in 20+ years. That nut's not hard to find a replacement for BTW. Got me a shiny new one from Ace/True Value for cheap.

 

You need to get a pulley holder, similar to one for a crankshaft, to put opposing forces on the pulley.

Or an air gun...

I'm having the same issue with a stuck bolt on my PS pulley. So, this cold chisel idea... Perhaps a chisel and an air hammer? I'm guessing that will probably destroy the bolt that nut threads on to though.

 

GAAH! This nut still hasn't come off! And to make matters worse, I tried splitting the nut with my air hammer, and now it just looks like the nut and all the threads have melded together into a big mess. It may be time to figure out how to get the PS pump retainer bolt out while the pulley is still attached, cause I'm not sure that pulley is ever coming off.

 

okay, next idea: Use a hacksaw behind the pulley since I'm replacing the PS pump anyway. Then I can just slide the pulley off the back of the threaded bolt holding it in... possible?

 

I recently had to remove mine for a timing belt replace. I sprayed the nut with WD40 (Speaialist Penetrant) (not sure if it's any better than the original WD40), and used a large pair of Vice Grips to hold the back side of the pulley. Make sure you use a six point socket and get a good "clamp" with the Vice Grips. It did the trick for me. There was a light coat of rust on the shaft and pulley bore, so the WD40 did help in that situation.
