Hi, I have a 99 limited edition SR5.

I was interested in doing a front and rear brake job. I was told by my mechanic that the brakes are drum brakes and is a very labor intensive job. He wanted to charge me $600 for the job.

Is this something I can do on my own? I've done brake jobs on Honda Accord, Mazda Miata, and Acura Integras in the past and it was a cinch.

$600!! I would find a new mechanic. I did mine at the beginning of the year. It took me about 4hrs for front and rear total including smoke and beer breaks. I didn't find anything that was difficult.

 

i did my fronts with the help of my dad and it was $400+ in just parts,, i havent had to do the rears yet but i do have tundra brakes so that does make a difference.

 

Are yall talking about just changing pads/shoes or calipers and cylinders as well?

 

pads and shoes is like $100 at the most for parts like $40 min

 

The front brakes are discs, the rears are drums. If you're just doing new pads, rotors and shoes, it should be about $150 for parts and it's about a 3-4 hour job (and can be much faster if you've done it before).

But, before you buy parts, at least research the Tundra Brake Upgrade for the front brakes. It's a big improvement over the stock 4runner calipers and it's a completely bolt-on job. The Tundra calipers come in 199mm and 231mm. The biggest concern is knowing what wheels will clear which calipers, but we can tell you that if you tell us, or better yet, show us a pic of what wheels you have. That is, if increasing your braking ability is something you are after.
