Hey, I am kind of new to this so I don't exactly know how to do it. Anyways, I have a 1989 Toyota pickup. 22re 4cyl 4wheel drive. I recently put a new motor in and I am having trouble. At first, the issue was that it would run rough when it got warm. We made a temporary adjustment to the cold start injector time switch so that when it got warm the cold start would shut off. This fixed the problem. The next day I went to start it and it wouldnt start, just crank. the only way we can get it to start now is spraying starting fluid in the intake tube and jumping the fuel pump relay (fp and +b). Please let me know if you have any input on possibilities or suggestions. I am stumped, so anything helps. Thank you!

 

Sounds like your cold start injector is not working.

What "temporary adjustment" did you make?

 

Try doing one thing at a time (jumping the fuel pump OR using starting fluid). If it starts with just jumping the fuel pump relay, it probably is not the cold start injector (but you'll have to wait until it gets, oh, cold, to tell for sure). It probably is something in the circuit that keeps the pump running, including the COR and VAF.

If it starts w/o jumping but with starting fluid, TNRabbit's advice is the way to start.

 

if I do one or the other it doesnt work. The temporary adjustment made was we just cut the wires to the CSI time switch and when it warms up we just twist the two wires together to shut it off. I put a different cold start injector (used) and it still didnt work. So I was thinking of trying to buy a new one. All my fuses are good, but my fuel pump wont turn on unless I do it manually.

 

I'm guessing the fuel pump relay is not working properly if you're having to jump the fuel pump to get the engine to run. Have someone crank the engine while checking the voltage to ground at the FP terminal. It should go to 12V while cranking. If not, then you need to think about replacing the relay.
