I have a 1991 Toyota truck (3 L 5 speed), I just changed the clutch and master and now it wont go into 5th gear. All gears worked perfectly prior to the new clutch. I'm at a loss and would really appreciate some guidance on what to do now or what to look at. Thank you for the help.

 

Look in were your shifter is I had stuff fall in there when I took mine out one of the small gulf that protect it on the in side

 

Did you ever get a answer about your problem? I Just changed my clutch. all back together now and no fifth gear!!! I don't know what to do.. I don't want to take it back out.. it took me eight hours to get it out, and eight to put it back in.. Every thing was fine before it was removed

 

does it grind when you try to put it into 5th gear, or just refuse to go into gear? my trans was doing that with second gear, you had to be going really slowly to get it into gear, no grinding.

make sure that you have the pedal free play adjusted correctly.

 

gear shifter seems like its in position, or just a hair short of being in place, I let off clutch and it grinds. With the old clutch I was able to release clutch about six inches before it engaged, now I have maybe an inch before it catches. I had to google what pedal free play was. never heard that term. how do you adjust it?

 

when you gently move the clutch pedal in and out, with your hand, there is a small distance where it moves with no resistance, before it actually starts compressing the clutch master cylinder.

I forget what the correct amount of that free play is supposed to be, I try to make it as little as possible, half an inch at the most? anyway, there is a rod coming out of the firewall, bolted to the clutch pedal, that is adjustable... that's where you'd take up the free play.

when you are talking about moving six inches, that's how far the pedal comes up off of the floor?

you took off the shifter to pull the trans, how did those two bushings look? the small one on the end of the shifter rod, and the circular bushing that the ball of the shifter rides on?

 

its also very short distance.. im really not getting any answers from anyone ive talked to either. its my work truck .. and fourth gear all the way to and from is a pain
