seeking some words of wisdom: 85 4runner w/ a 302 and toy transmission

hey im blake and new to forums. nice to meet you all! i'll get right to the point....i have just recently bought another 4runner. but its got some quirks and i need some advice! its a 1985 3in body lift 4in suspension lift....1989 rear end.. the stock motor was swapped to a ford 302 v8 out of a 1986 bronco by the previous owner. he said he was done with it due to not having time and ive always wanted a project 4runner since i love my 1987 daily driver so much (its also a 4runner 4in suspension lift but otherwise all stock) so i took it off of his hands. the 302 is still mated to the STOCK toyota 5 speed manual transmission, and the tranny is on its last leg (reverse is blown out and it rattles and knocks lol). this truck is alot of fun and my priority right now is fixing the transmission problem....but i dont really want to rebuild the stock trany cause im pretty sure it would just blow again cause it cant really handle the v8...does anyone out there have any sugestions on what type of transmission i could use that wouldnt require me to get new running gear but will stand up to the v8? i dont really want to do any cutting either... thanks and howdy.

right next to the hood canal bridge....on the kitsap county side. yah i was a skeptical when i bought this thing cause ive never heard a toyota to ford engine swap...i got some buddies who got chevy motors in their rigs but i kind of want to keep the 302 its pretty fresh. and i just cant go back to the 22r after feeling the power differance betwean the two haha.

yah bell housing is differant on mine thats the only thing. but yah stock yota tranny....but she isnt going to hold on much longer... any suggestions or something that points me in the right direction would help a bunch! i plan on building this 302 eventually also....so stock trans isnt going to cut it.

C4 Trans wouldn't fit under there with all that body lift, etc.? You concerned that beef trans might blow out the rear end, etc.?

PS> I've built a few 302's, couple Hypo 289's, 429, 428, 351 or 2, ..... The 302 is VERY versatile and can take a beating, ...and MAN can they be made to fly!

Can't wait to see what you do and WELCOME TO YOTATECH, MAN! lol. (Us Ford fans gotta stick together! lol) JK, guys! ( ) haha.

Chef has a great point about the rear end. Post a pic of the rear diff, you can tell by the pinion housing if it might be a v6 third. sounds like you should put a 9" in there...

hey bud thanks for the warm welcome ! and just you guys wait...im very motivated to make this one hell of a 4runner. ill post some more pics and stuff tomorrow. i just stumbled across this...http://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/swaps.htm can anyone shed some light on these transmissions and what one do you think would be a easy swap? i would love to be able to keep it a manual... it kinda sounds like putting a auto in it like c4 or c6 would be alot harder due the cooling and electronic shifting jazz... but im open to all ideas... going to meet up witha buddy of mine who is a mechanic and we are gonna brainstorm some stuff.

Hahahaha, .... <<< I'm actually laughing just from being giddy! lol. Sounds great!

Might be a tight fit/swap with the trans, but I say do it NOW! lol. I want to see you doing donuts and flying up hills in the dirt! NOT FOR ME, of course! lol. Honest, ....why not roll it without all that worry about your trans exploding, right?

Pretty sweet rig... Like you said, needs a lil TLC and a couple upgrades/mods maybe, ....but, heck, ..... who doesn't? I've been at it for 2 years or so and I'm STILL a ways off. OH, and I, too, am about to swap a trans in. Can't find an R151F, ....but hey, I'm not a magician, right? hmmmmmm.... hahaha.
