Vwfastg60's 88xtra cab daily driver build.

After daily driving my 87 for a year and 8 months I decided I want to take the sas truck off the road and take it to the next level. So I picked up a wrecked 88 v6 auto. Not the best motor and tranny set up but I couldnt pass this one up. The truck came from California so it's 99% rust free. The pics look bad but the seams are just rust that rinsed out of the seam. I will take care of it.

I plan on a full respray and major interior clean up. I want this thing to be mint.

Ok so starting at the beginning. Went to pick this thing up to part. Looked to be a light roll but the seller swore to me it brushed a wall. BS! It flopped maybe not hard but it did. Here's the pics from the night I got it. I stopped at my buddy's shop to get a good once over before I finished my drive home.

So it turned out the reason for the roll was a blown tire

So I haven't made much progress But I have a plan and I'm gathering parts.
So I attempted to put a door on it and that didn't work as I saw coming but I didn't see this coming.

Ah crap.

The whole firewall is rocked back. A pillar is wacked hard.

So what do I do?

Picked up a new cab.

I also sold the topper and bed liner.

Really happy to see the bed super clean

I needed some motivation to get working on the cab so I mounted the new tires.
Here are a few pics of the good side. I put some 31/10.5/15 Baja claw radials on it today.

Pics of the interior vacuumed out.

List of stuff to do.
Prep the body- shave the clutch master hole and fix the new cab. It has a few dings. Fix the one spot of rust on the tailgate and the spot starting on the bed. Remove all seam sealer on the lower bed half and get the surface rust out. Remove the interior and old body after the new cab is painted.

Picked up a gallon of white Paint with a mild mild pearl in it. Should be a good clean look. I plan on doing the sr5 graphics in blue.

I had a set of rancho shocks in the garage and a longer set of shackles and new bushings. Plan on 1 inch of lift there and a slight tbar crank.

While the body is off my buddy is going over the motor even tho the headgaskets were done about 40k ago. It's gotta run perfect for a daily.

Replace drivers control arm and put new bushings through out.

Wrap the armrest and clean the interior.

80mil rattle trap mat. Gotta be quiet.

Install mb quart 4" 2way dash speakers I had in my truck when it had a stock dash. Adding 6.5 set to the doors and maybe a ten or 2 8's on the rear shelf.

Those are details tho. Big stuff first.

The wrecked one didnt look to bad until you put the door on. At least it will have several good parts. Both actually look to be clean trucks. Always liked that body style. Subscribed and looking forward toyur build.

Thanks. I thought the same thing. This was going to be an easy fix I thought. Maybe push the piller out a bit throw a door and fender on it and fix the bed. The whole firewall is slightly rocked back and it's just more work then I wanna do to a cab. Plus I'd much rather have one I know hasn't been bent a bunch of ways and made to look perfect.

I gutted the cab and hung a set of doors. The doors were going to be rock doors for my 87 but wound up being cleaner then the others so I figure I will use em.I really wish I hadn't got rid of my old 2wd cab at this point. The new cab has a few dings and is goin to take some time to repair. The issue is trying to find a rust free or hasnt been wrecked anything anymore. The new cab has small damage but hasn't been hit before so it should be decent when finished

You have got it gutted. The extra work will pay off. So much easier to paint and taping off is a workout in itself. Definitely looking forward to the bodywork and progress.

Thanks. Part of the reason I like doing it this way is I'm not a fan of masking. I can't stand masking lines. Honestly our fj cruiser drives me up the wall. I want to paint it so bad to get rid of it. This will get the some of the treatment my 87 did. I'm going to retexture the fenderwells, lay some 80mil mat in it to cut down some noise and paint inside and out. If I can't do it 100% the way Toyota did it I might as well do it better
