heres the deal. truck sat for 2 weeks. came back, tried starting it, nothing. put some fuel in the carb, started right up. ok, so its not getting fuel. i just replaced the fuel filter a couple months ago. i put a new fuel pump in today, and it started right up and idled perfectly. i let it warm up, and went to hit the gas. as soon as i did, the thing went full throttle open. throttle isnt sticking either i dont think. pressing the throttle down didnt bring it out of it. then after the truck sat for a bit, that whole thing went away. but now, its making this super loud noise.

the truck was idling, then it sputtered, and started doing this.

i dont think its the timing chain, because other people say that theres goes away with higher rpms. mine just gets faster. Free truck anybody

I'd hate to say it but, I bet over reving it spun a bearing somewhere. Start pulling some spark plugs one by one and see if you can get it to somewhat go away.

listening to it again, sounds a little too hollow to be a rod bearing though. Don't know if that's just the cam playing tricks or not. It wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover and see if the timing chain stuff is still intact. It's rather easy to do on a 22r.

Maybe a wrist pin knock? Not too familiar with what that sounds like though.

is the arm supposed to be contacting that wheel thing like it is? its the only way the thing would go in

those gouges on the fuel pump cam don't quite look right. I wonder if for some reason that fuel pump seized up on you. Looks new though. Hard to tell in the video since it's moving around so much, you do have that plastic spacer for the fuel pump in there right?

 

fuel pump is brand new today, and yes, spacer is on there.

 

Make sure that cam sprocket nut is still tight, I have seen those back out to the point where the timing chain wasn't turning.

 

you think thats whats causing the noise? that would sure be a relief

 

if that nut is loose yes. Not sure why that fuel pump cam looks like that though. Unless there is something wrong with that fuel pump you just put in. Have you tried going back to the old pump?

 

no, i havent. definitely a bad pump though, as soon as i replaced it the truck fired right up. and you're talking about the nut inside the head, but kinda on the edge there on that cam/gear lookin thing? im still learnin engine stuff haha, got the drivetrain down (minus the engine) .

 

So you changed back to the old pump but sound is still there? And I am talking about the bolt (did I say nut oooops) that holds the cam gear/fuel pump cam to the camshaft.

 

no, it wont run with that pump. so no point in putting it back on. and that bolt is tight as it can possibly be

 

thinking about it more, im pretty sure all these problems are related to that pump. the arm had to be pushed up a little bit in order for it to get in there. and im pretty sure those marks on the cam gear are from the NEW pump.

 

Depending on what position the camshaft was in you may have to push that arm up to get it in there, That's how it works. That fuel pump cam isn't actually just round is oblong aka eccentric. Just like a camshaft lobe.

 

a buddy of mine just told me he thinks it's a wrist pin knock as well. I asked him since I knew he just had that problem after hydro-locking his engine.

And although these guys aren't on here much if at all, they are through and through toyota guys.

 

Brandon, it didn't lock, he drove it home. lol It could also be a cracked piston, etc. We still haven't tore it down to check. lol But there is a distinct difference in sound between a top end knock and bottom end knock.. Been around the whole show long enough to see that. =P

 

Haha in either case that engine saw water and either busted the wrist pin or cracked the piston around the wrist pin. And to me that is too light of a knock to even be piston slap from a cracked piston and/or busted rings.

im gonna take the fuel pump out, and run it for a second on the gas in the bowl. see if that makes it go away. i really think its related to that fuel pump for some reason. maybe its too far in? i dont know. then ill look into the wristpin knock, which ive never even heard of before.
