83 pickup wont go into gear. clutch problems maybe?
A buddy recently got a 83 4x4 pickup and the PO swapped in a new G52. He also replaced the slave cylinder, clutch, and pressure plate as well as the throwout and pilot bearings. There's a few problems.
1) The shifter moves, but doesn't seem to engage properly as the truck wont move. And the shifter moves easily without pressing the clutch even with the engine running, except it wont go into 5th gear.
We bled the clutch several times but the pedal is still not as stiff as a new clutch should be. My first guess was that the clutch was stuck engaged. So we dropped the driveshaft and when the truck is running, i can see the back of the transfer case(where the driveshaft goes) spinning. It spins in different speeds for the different gears and opposite direction for reverse.
2) when the clutch is pressed all the way in with the engine running, there is a horrible scraping sound coming from the bellhousing.
3) the starter makes some weird noises right after it starts. it souds as though its scraping on something but the truck starts fine.
Any help is appreciated! thanks!

I also can never quite remember if, when running a different model tranny, if you need to have the flywheel resurfaced to a different step, and if you use the clutch that matches the engine model, or tranny model? And which clutch fork you use...the correct one for the tranny, or engine?
That's weird that the gears are moving. I guess there's enough power going to the tranny/t-case that it will spin the gears, but not enough to move the truck when the rear shaft is hooked up?

From what little I know G52 should be a drop in. It's the same size bellhousing as an L52. It almost sounds like the clutch is partially engaged full time (not fully disengaging). Then when you step on the clutch it's pushing the pressure plate in too far and hitting the clutch disc?
Again i'd check clutch alignment, clearances, pedal adjustments. Go through it all and set everything to factory spec. And most of all pull the trans and take a look for wear. If there's grinding, it'll show.
As far as which flywheel etc to use, I would guess they're all the same for G52/L52. A quick search on a parts site should tell you.

So i had some time to work on it today. I dropped the tranny and the clutch, pressure plate, fork, and throwout bearing were all in order. the flywheel was brand new, so i guess it was put in with the tranny.
the pilot bearing however, was out of place and was just sitting in there by the flywheel bolts (but not in place). I hoping that accounts for the screeching/scraping sound as i didnt see any signs of anything else.
I checked with a buddy of mine and it is the right flywheel, fork, etc. Tomorrow i will check the adjustments/clearances and make sure they are factory spec. And while we're at it i think im gonna replace the master and slave as they are pretty cheap and simple to do. and the master cylinder seems like its never been replaced.
Thanks for the help. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Great! They do some weird stuff. When my master was going out one very cold winter, my truck would only move (creep forward) if I pushed the clutch in as far as it would go. But I could sit, idling, in gear, with the clutch out. Didn't move and didn't stall...
