My 99 4Runner Limited has 215,000 miles! I noticed she is starting to squeak from underneath. It's definitely not coming from a tire, it's coming from underneath the entire truck.

I stood on the running boards and it doesn't squeak when I jump up and down but it does squeak when I push it forward to backward. It also squeaks a little bit when I stand on the rear bumper and jump.

Any ideas what it could be? Is is something I can grease or does it indicate that something is wrong??

It's almost sounding like it's comming from the panhard bar (from the rear diff to the frame). Just for clarification, when the squeek occurs what kind of squeek is it? Is it a long drawn out squeek or a short one? Is it loud or faint? To narrow it down I would crawl down under there as a friend tries to re-create the squeek; that's how I figured out the source of the squeek on my truck. Just make sure when your friend is jumping on your runner, you don't get into a spot that you will be pinched or crushed.....it will suck.

 

A friends t-100 had a squeak that was pain to find ,it turned out to be the ball joints needing greased. His truck had plugs in the ball joints that he replaced with grease zerks, and after a good greasing the squeak went away. My 4x4 has a tie rod that squeaks but it doesn't have any way to grease it.

 

When's the last time it had a full chassis\driveline lube?

I'd start there...

 

mines got a similar squeak... Ive been told its the U joints

 

Does the squeek change with the speed of the truck?
If you have never greased your undercarriage, get a grease gun, climb under there, and start looking for grease fittings. There are quite a few, especially on 4wd's. If it's dirty under there, some grease fittings may be covered in dirt and easy to miss. Look real close for them, especially at the u Joints themselves

 

I had a squeak that got faster as I increased speed, couldn't figure it out until it started clunking when put in drive and had crazy vibrations over about 40mph. Got underneath and noticed one of my U-joints was toast. It was so bad that it wouldn't press out, couldn't hammer it, tried popping it with an air hammer and large socket, heat, you name it! ended up having to cut it out with a cut-off wheel. Popped a new one in and all is well. Definitely make sure everything is lubed!

 

i would check u joints or ball joint! my truck had a similar squeak the my u joint broke and when i put the new one on it stoped!!!

 

It's definitely squeaking all the time now, especially when it goes over a bump. It doesn't change with speed so I know it has to do with the springs, or joints, etc. I don't think I've ever had any grease put anything under there. Maybe I should just get a grease gun and start greasing. I know it's pretty rusty under there.

 

I had a squeak somewhat recently, couldn't figure out what it was but it progressively got worse. Within a week the problem presented itself: my rear left shock mount (at the axle) broke and the squeak went away. So you never know, it may just need lube or something could be on the verge of breaking

 

It'll quit eventually when the part breaks and falls off.
