The new 32x11.5x15 tires and 15x10 American Racing outlaw rims I just bought stick out too far from the fender to be legal in my opinion. I was just wondering what the law is regarding how far your tires are supposed to stick out of your fenderwells. I could always buy flares if this is an issue. And if the laws are different from state to state, then I need to know the laws for Maryland. I would post pictures here but I can't figure out how to xD. ^I probably should have measured the actual distance they stick out from the fenderwell. That would definitely be helpful xD

 

Im in MD aswell... getting you an answer now. As far as actually getting pulled over for that, so far i havnt run into the issue, and i have alot of friends in the area that are on yotatech aswell as other places that run oversize tires that have never had a problem.

 

OK, so as i read it, Tire side wall or "swell" can stick out past the fenders. Tire tread has to be coverd but again, as i said, i have yet to hear anyone here with over size tires get a ticket or pulled over solely for tires. I plan on putting MT 33/12.5/15 on in july with stock fenders. So take it as you will

yes and there is also this thingy called that with a little bit of effort you should be able to find out your locaL laws (aka: maryland)

 

I think this law differs from state to state. Where I grew up(Wa. St.) you couldnt have more then 1" of tire outside your fenders before they required flares(most of the time they would let you skate until it was more like 2") and you bumpers could not be more then 36" off the ground.In MD I would suggest you look it up or call the DMV just too be safe..

Hi, I really need a set of fender flares before putting my new tires on because they stick out of the fender, maybe 2 or 2.5 inches. I need a fender flare that covers this. I was looking at Bushwacker cut out flares, because they cover 3 inches of tire. What I need to know is: Do I have to trim my fenders to put these on? I don't want them if I do. Can anyone suggest a fender flare that I don't need to trim my fenders to install and that will cover at least 2 inches of tire?? Thanks in advance.

Get the Bushwacker fender flares without the cutouts. I love mine. They actually stick out more than I thought they would.

x2 on the extend a flare from Bushwacker. PA is pretty strict on this. I can legally fit 12.50s with these flares. I also found out that the cutout flares are actually not legal, because they stick out too far.

Okay, well I think my mechanic was wrong. I thought he said no more than 2" wide flares. He was wrong before about having a net, instead of a tailgate too though.

PA Code § 175.77. Body
(e) Fender flares. A vehicle may be equipped with fender flares not to exceed 3 inches.

Cutouts are 3", so should be legal. But, unless you are running wider than a 1250, the cutouts IMHO would be overkill.

 

Good thing I can tuck my 33 12.50s on mine with just backspacing.
Another way to get around that 3" rule is to buy a set of 4" fiberglass fenders. Don't think the book says anything about after-market fenders.

 

I did a ton of looking for flares for my 89 since I had some tire sticking out farther than I wanted. There are several options out there that do not require cutting, everything from BW flares to JC Whitney to the "garden edging" option. I ended up going with BW cutouts since I got a killer deal on a set. Believe it or not there isn't really that much to cut. At least not on mine.
