i use to live in cali and yeah keep the oregon plates and that as long as possible. they will try and rape u for tabs plates and everything, u will have to put the egr and pvc back on. or u just might have to sell it.

Might depend on where you're moving to in CA whether you have to resmog it every 2 years. In Inyo county, I only had to smog my '83 when I transferred the title to me. My Runner wouldn't pass right now, so I just keep getting OR tags renewed for it. As far as OR knows, it's driven around my parent's place.

I thought, being military, that you don't have to transfer plates etc to the state you're stationed in. Do you have family in another state that you can register your truck in?

none of the above options will work for me. I guess I'll move in, run on the oregon tabs and just gradually bring it up to compliance. if I cant make it work, I'll sell it. bummer. I have 1.5 years on the tabs to figure it out.

thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, either you have a lot of work to do or milk it as long as possible. There's no getting around the bastards at DMV/CARB (Cali Air Resource Board). Or just find a Cali truck with the equipment. For first Generations 4x4s I recommend a '83 over all others in regards to passing smog.

military do not have to transfer their plates but in san diego you have to get a smog check just to get you dod decal to drive onto base.

I would sell it before you move....just in case you can't get to smog specs, which are steep here. Also, while you may want to run your OR plates here for a year or so, if you get pulled over for anything, the cop may mandate you register the car here. Happened to me my last year of college down here - was running WA plates and got nailed for speeding near Santa Barbara - the other ticket I got was for plates....save yourself some grief and sell it now.

I think I have decided to sell it. If the forum guys will permit me, I would like to set up a thread and take silent offers for folks in oregon. I want this truck to go to a good home.

you are welcome to put up an ad in the classified sections (I would love to buy it but am too broke) but you will need to have a price per the rules..

I have a 76 that should pass smog and is stock and was in great shape. Hit a deer on Monday. Needs a radiator, front grill and hood. Maybe a swap? I'm in Medford and can send before and after pics if you are interested. It is a fantastic truck, just looks like a pug now.

what'd be a good asking price for my truck? $2000? it WAS mint until i got that hit n run but overall it's a very solid rig that runs great, desmogged and weberized ready to go.

i would say $2k is a good starting point. it is a lot cleaner than most 2WD pre 83's I have seen on craigslist lately...
