87 4runner... good deal???

I have found an 87 4runner 4x4 with the 22re motor on craigslist but not sure if it is a good deal. I have looked at it from the outside but not heard it run yet(the guy is out of town) It is white and does have some body issues like rust around the rear fenders and the hood appears to be held down by a tie down strap. The interior appears to be ok except the stereo is completely gone and the guy has the back pannel off the tailgate. Now the main issue is that he says the motor is knocking but does not know why. im not that familiar with toyotas so I do not know how big of an issue this is. Oh and it already has decent rock sliders on it. I plan on using the 4runner as just a trail rig to beat around and have fun with in the future. His asking price is $800 and I am going to look at it moday. How does it sound???

Regarding rust....where do you live? If you're in the "rust belt" this sounds like an issue....if not, then....

I paid $1200 for my 87 in 2002. A steal, in my mind. Find a local mecahnic who knows Yotas and doa pre purchase inspection if you get serious (I did this AFTER I bought mine, because I couldn't pass up the great deal).

Photos would help us help you more though

Honestly from the way that's sounding. I would pass. Offer him 100$ if he takes it. Go scrap the truck and take the money to find another in better shape.

From what you've said you would be nearly 3 grand in it before you could drive it. Ballpark atleast another 1k for repairs you can see. And maybe more for the ones you can't sEe. That's is nearly 4grand before you can even begin to enjoy it. A pass in my eyes as I would walk away. Unless you can get it for 100$ and kEep it as a parts truck for later.

800$ is to much
