Ammo Can for Center Console

I'm considering going ghetto on my center console by using an ammo can. Mine is trashed, hinge FUBAR, and the latch destroyed. I have looked at jcwhitney and others who carry aftermarket ones and the are 'underwhelming'.

My thought is that an ammo box has a great hinge, many are sealed, and I can (carefully) weld or epoxy to it if need be. Small drawback is that the lid is not padded, but thats an easy fix.

Anyone fitted one? Pros and cons? Seems as if the sizes are endless on ebay...

The trim around the shifters is getting binned too as its destroyed. I'll probably just trim it out with diamond plate or something similar.

certainly not professional but it will help elbows from getting whacked really back while out and about.
cut the handle off:

used some padding from an old headrest, some wood anchors:

ended up with this:

need to pull it apart and paint it with some Crapoleum Hammered paint or something.

That's just entirely too awesome for words! Love it! That kind of mod may even be enough to get my girlfriend to break down and get herself a new car and stop having me play taxi driver.

Considered swapping out my console for something ... more utilitarian.... waterproof... insulated..... that would hold a six-er and some ice myself. Darn thing's still in top notch shape though and a little hard to justify ripping out atm given the other issues witch require more immediate attention.

ocdropzone - I guess I thought the .50cal wasn't big enough, but it sure seems to be. It'll also allow room for a fab'd cupholder in front of it.

mlrunner95 - is that the 40mm M548 ammo can? It seems to be the best size of all the ammo cans I have checked out. Problem is the ones I have seen have a latch on each side versus a latch + hinge. What is your ammo can setup?

Oh - I have a soft top, so none of the console switches will ever be used

The only bad part about it is that it has a latch on both ends, whereas I need a hinge on one end. This is where I started:

and this is where I ended up with the help of 4" door hinge - the latch has resistance when closing so I think it might still be waterproof

the door hinge even makes it so the lid doesn't just flop all the way back

Thats what I did ^

I think the 40mm is the best choice if you have one/ can get one. I JB welded and screwed a door hinge on the back of mine (my MIG welder didnt want to work) and it has been great. Just chop off one of the latches and attach your choice of door hinge. It still seals up great.

^^I would consider grinding down the corner lips(helps stacked ammo cans from falling) might hurt when your elbow comes down hard on it if offroad...

see the 40's I might go bigger. I still have a few around

Qty. 3 of the 40mm / M548 ammo cans on the way!

I figure I'll post this for future reference for others:

Pretty clean mod...

I forgot about this thread.

Anyway, I finished my ammo can mod and put a camo pad on top using the lower leg material from a pair of rip-stop BDU's that I cut into shorts. The 40mm versions are sealed when closed.

I used this very easy method to mod the can to make it hinged. No welds or special hardware...just about $5 worth of stuff from the fastener aisle in Home Depot. I am very pleased.

The 1/2" bolt uses red loctite and is only tightened to snug. It cannot be removed and will only spin if you put a wrench on it from the outside. This is how the back side stays attached permanently.

O'reilly's and Autozone have them for $6 each in their cupholder area. Its called a "seat wedge".

They fit perfectly widthwise in the map pocket of a first gen 4Runner...lengthwise if you add a Leatherman

One word of caution is that they are in the way of the bottom position of the window crank if there is a cup in there.
