Bad Brakes (odd clunk + weird pedal action)

So I've got an odd intermittent brake issue (I've searched for similar issues without luck):

Half the time my brakes work fine, but the other half the time I have a very stiff pedal with minimal braking power... if I really press hard then there is a large clunk and the pedal will then travel another 2 inches-3inches.

I just had the front and rear brakes professionally replaced (problem existed before and continues to exist)

Any thoughts??

Did they replace the calipers? That sounds like a sticking caliper piston to me, or maybe they didnt grease the pins, and the pads are hanging up on them...

Do what? He said it is an intermittent problem so if they did test drive it they may not have been able to duplicate the problem, also he stated that it was this way before the brake work was done, so if he has new calipers, pads, shoes and hardware the problem exists in another part of the brake system. Typically a bad brake booster will give you a very stiff pedal but I am not sure if it would cause the clunking noise that you are hearing. Did you mention the problems to the service writer when you first brought your truck to them? Because if that is the case, then yes you should take it back to the shop and tell them the problem is still there, if not, then that is your bad.
