I just got done adding bedliner to my 88 4runner (my new one which needs a lot of cosmetic work)

I will type up a short write-up in a bit, with lots of pictures.

(i also am re upholstering all of the interior, including changing the interior from burgundy to black)

that's what I'm planning on doing this summer, what's your plan for the side panels?

 

just some 1/8 plywood, cut in the same pattern as the original side. once I make the compartment door (working on that now) I will cover it in bedliner as well.

I toyed with the idea of getting diamond plate and doing that for the sides and tailgate, but that would be a bit pricey + hot in the texas sun (thinkin of my son accidentally touching it while playing, would hurt)

 

by the way, I did about 3-4 layers of bedliner (plastikote) and it only used a little over half of the gallon.

 

looks good I've been thinking of doing that for awhile now. How much time did you spend on the bed and what kind of prep did you do on top of the "Rusty Metal Primer"?

BTW, be careful if you hear the call of nature while rolling that stuff -> How Do I Get Herculiner Off of My Hootus?!

 

1) I cleaned/swept it out
2) I took off every piece of hardware (those d-rings and the rollbar)
3) I washed it with soap (not zipwax carasoap, regular dishsoap) & water and then let it dry
4) I started with some sand paper to get the rust down a bit
- after about an hour or so of that I switched to a wire brush
5) wire brush for at least 1 and 1/2 solid hours
6) sweep, soap, and water again
7) then I used the Rustoleum Rust Reformer Primer stuff, there was lots to choose from, I just picked what I thought would work best.
8) after that dried (took 1 1/2 cans, I had to run back to the store in the middle of it), I did the bedliner from one side to the other, then wait about 15 minutes, and repeat and so on.

 

Did you sand the primer ?

 

I did not. the instructions say it would go on any surface without the need for sanding or priming, i just did the primer because I couldnt get all the rust out.

 

Looks good. I did the same thing with herculiner tail gate to firewall. Prep work is everything.The stuff will come up after a while if the surface isnt just right. it wont stick. I havent got around to making new panels, let us know how it goes.

When I made a cut out for the rear 1/4s out of thin plywood, I didn't think about the curve near the tail gate so I scrapped the idea. The plywood edges where I cut out of the compartment seemed way to week like they would break. Got any pics of how you did that?

oh, and that hootus and herculiner thread is hilarious!!!! Goes on for 15 pages, lol

 

I'm thinking the edge by the compartment is pretty thin as well. I'm thinking about reinforcing them somehow.

I know they don't make the curve at the very end, I just cut of short and am going to put bedliner on the wall where the quarterpanel doesn't cover.

I made some quarter panels for my good 4runner cause I didnt think the originals are very sturdy, then I got the new 4runner with almost no interior panels at all, so I moved them over from that.

Do you have the final pic of the bedliner with side panels installed? Is that bedliner stuff hard to put on

I also ripped out all the carpet for the front and put bedliner on that. I have no experiece with Rhino liner, but the Bedliner stuff I used was simple to put on and seems to be holding up great.

eveileye, great work looks good. Have you had a chance to drive the 4runner much since you did the bed liner? I'm curious about road noise vs the carpet if its more or less. My carpet is shot but this is also my DD so I don't want to add in a lot of road noise.

yI have not driven it since I added it. it has been sitting in the driveway with all the seats out cause I am making recovers, and cause I got busy at work. I've heard that there will be a lot of road noise, but I don't know if it will be much more noise than you already get from when the tops off. I am actually more concerned with heat emanating up through the floor. if it does get overly hot (or noisy) I figure I can always put down noise dampened then some new carpet or vinyl over it. it was more of a, I've got the materials on hand, and the original carpet was beyond repair.
