First toyota build, need good starting place

Hey all,
Hope this is in the right place. Bought an 84 pickup a while ago for just a daily driver to keep miles off my diesel. Decided to rebuild the motor (22r) and was wanting some input on what things would be good for a build and what i could wait on. For example, is it worth going .30 over on the pistons, how much cam, fuel pumps, adjustable cam gears, etc. This is my first experience with toyotas, other builds have been bowties. I dont have all the money in the world, but would like to have a truck with enough go i can take to the mountains hunting and such. Right now its sitting on a spring over lift and 33s. Hope thats enough information, and welcome any ideas. Thanks again.

Over boring the cylinders really isn't going to make any big gains IMO. I would suggest if you want it to have more go to take to the mountains, a 3RZ swap or something similar would be nice.

For my $.02, contact http://www.engnbldr.com/ and look into the build-a-kits. Talk to them and tell them what you are looking for and they will put together a rebuild kit tailored to how you want to drive it.

For my money, a mild perf rebuild will get you where you want to be. I would go with a good, quality header (OBX has one that retains factory emmissions for 49 states for under 2 bills). If you are carb'ed, a fuelie swap may be in order. Propane rocks, but can be a bit of a hassle if you get too far from home or for too long. Barring that, Offenhauser makes a manifold for several carb options including stock, 2300 Holley and Weber.

Remember, there is nowhere a properly geared 22r'd Toy can't go.

this is an older post but I will through in my 2 pennies anyway.BigRob has a point. I think that the right gears are the most important thing to have. If you're running stock diff gears with 33's you are killing torque,hp, and mpg's. I think that proper gearing will get you the most gains. Then I personally would get more air to it. Like a K&N Filter and through some new plugs and wires...get it running right before you spend money on upgrades. Proper gears can put it back to stock specs factoring in larger tires. You might be impressed with how well it does with just the little things...except the gears...they're pricey$$$$
