I have an 89 22re single cab 4x4 5speed with 235k that just blew a head gasket and has an oil leak. Ive talked to a few mechanics and they said its not really worth putting the money in to a motor that high mileage without a full rebuild. Im looking at a 92 22re 5peed 2wd w/130K and wondering if it can easily be swapped for mine. I would like to sap them then rebuild mine in my spair tme witch i have little of. I have read that the oil pan and some tubes may be different but all interchangable. My biggest concern are the motor mounts, does anyone know if those will line up? And do you guys have an idea of what a shop should be charging to pull both motors and reinstall one, just labor? Thanks for any help i really wanna do this right.

 

i think it does and the only thing you should have to change is the oil pickup and the pan

 

Do it yourself and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.
All you'll need to do is swap pans and oil pickups (like said before)
Everything will swap over, and all the mounts should line up

 

not every one has resources to swap a motor themselves....not being mean, just sayin.

but yeah if you or a buddy have a cherry picker and your confident in doing it, thats the cheapest way. just make sure you get all the vacuum and coolant hoses right. The first time I tried cranked my newly rebuilt motor after dropping it, I mixxed up a coolant hose and was pumping water into my head...

If you have a shop do it they might charge you by the book and it could be in the 500 to 800 range. It took me about 3 hours to get mine out. so figure that being done twice, at about 85 an hour shop charge

 

Thanks alot, my mechanic said, between 5-600 for labor, but he seems confident for under 1000 he can do the head and the bottom end for me so im lookin in to that today. just gotta get her towed 10 mi to the shop. U guys think i should go for the swap w/130k or rebuild my 235k(that was suppposed to be rebuilt 25k ago!) and leaks oil from the timing cover?
