Why don't we have wider choice of gears?
i've always wondered why us toyota guys don't have a wider selection of r&p gears for our trucks. for example, you can get 3.90, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29 and 5.71. but how come there's no "in-between" gears like many other axles have? for example, nissan has 4.63 and 5.14 available. i've love to have a set of 5.14s on my truck since i plan on running 33s and tow my little boat around quite a bit

because there is so little difference, and there is not the market. 5.14 is very close to 5.29, and so on. i think we have it pretty good, as to regear most american axles requires a lot more than just a R&P, some housings wont accept some gears, some need new carriers and spiders. just get 5.29's and dont look back.

Because all gears available kill the same bird with slightly different stones. In the end, they are all still stones though.
The difference between 5.14's and 5.29's is like 5% or so. I hardly think that would make them objectionable.
You can get frmo 3.5 something to 7.17 in 60's IIRC, but that is because it is a largae axle from many applications.
The other issue is physical pinion size. There are only so many ways that teeth can be made a certain size, depth and number based on the max ring and pinion size.
