Hi all!

Looks like a very good forum you got here.

I joined another forum with some helpful folk there and did a few jobs 2 weeks ago such as
1/ changed all belts using OEM Toyota
2/ Replaced crankshaft seal
3/ Replaced oil pump gasket
4/ Replaced distributor O-ring
5/ Replaced oil and filter
6/ Degreased the engine and possibly a few things I shouldn't have..

I've since struggled with a rattling noise that sounds like a bad bearing.
On the plus side I have no more noticeable oil leaks, which is good.

Things I've tried:
I've used a stethoscope on all the moving parts such as all pulleys but can't notice anything because the noise only happens when I'm actually driving, not just revving or idling.. I removed the A/C belt. noise still there, replaced bearing inside small A/C adjuster pulley.. I replaced that belt, removed the idler pulley. Still there. Sprayed lanolin onto the alternator and pulley and water pump pulley.

Looked for loose bolts, they're all tight. It seems to get better when I loosen off the drive belts a little but they're on the verge of slipping when I start the truck up now so don't want to go any looser.

The rattle sometimes happens at slower speeds and gets faster and louder when just about to change gears (auto transmission by the way) sometimes it happens cruising at 100kmph, other times 30kmph. sometimes all of these, sometimes none of these or just 'some'.

Since spraying the lanolin it's been the best it has so far but still pops up about 40% of my driving time.

Is it possible that when I bolted the dizzy back onto the engine it was a tiny bit misaligned?

I've heard that you can turn back your timing a few notches, maybe this has something to do with it. I don't know but I can't rest until I get to the bottom of this, plus I really enjoy learning and working on the truck and find it really satisfying.


Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't really know that engine well but could it be a tensioner or idler pulley on the serpentine or timing belt? Take the tension off the belt and spin the tensioner pulley by hand and check for radial play. Timing belt is likely a little more involved.

 

Oh and spray a little water on the bearings on things at idle and see if it changes the tone.

 

Mine rattles too. I've talked with others and it seems to be a common problem.

 

check the heat shield on the exhaust manifold...mine were loose...

 

X2 on the heat shield, mine was missing a bolt.

 

X3 on the heat shield bolt. That partially solved my problem, but then I still had a second rattle. Took me weeks to realize I had left a shackle on the bumper after I pulled an Exploder out of a ditch.
