G144 axels and 97 4Runner

I have a 97 4Runner (3.4L) and have the potential to get some factory 4.88 3rd members from a wrecked 94 (3.0L). Will they work in my 97?? I read that V6 3rds (8" rear/7.5" ifs) haven't changed since the 80's?? However, I also read somewhere that the ifs might be different from 96 and up (high pinion, maybe?) I wouldn't think that should matter if I'm buying the whole 3rd member, though, right?? I did read that factory 4.88's were a different breed (thinner housing), but that I can still add aftermarket lockers like a normal diff, correct (just not aftermarket gears)? I'm a noob to these forums...if I am supposed to post this somewhere else, let me know. I'm ready for some learnin'. I'm kind of in a hurry tonight because 4.88's don't seem to last long and I'm ready to move up to 33" tires. So, I haven't had much of a chance to do further looking for the answers to this question. Thanks in advance.
