Question about 96-98 auto. shifter replacement

I had a 99 Tacoma several cars back before I got my 4runner, and it had the pistol grip type shifter (I believe the newer 3rd gens had this as well) as opposed to the car type one on the 96-98. Is it possible to cleanly swap out my big shifter for the other?

Both have the overdrive buttons in about the same spot and I remember the column going to the shifter being about the same...anyone tried it?

yeah i saw that before but i was wondering about the actual OEM piece shifter...not an aftermarket company. those flashy shifters in a 4runner are kinda ridiculous if you ask me...

The car-type ones are only in the 2wd models. I don't see why a 4wd auto shifter wouldn't work..

This shifter right?
