Water pump holes/My super clean valvetrain
Pulled the Valve cover/accessories off the engine today and started to pull the Tchain cover off when it started to rain.
I noticed on the water pump there are two holes.
Are these holes for when the water pump goes bad?

Also: My very clean valvetrain. This is what castrol GTX High mileage does

Exactly right. That is the weep hole. When the bearing begins to fail in the WP, it will allow coolant to leak past and drain out the weep hole. Kind of an early warning system.

Dunno, but the black plastic guides i replaced last summer definitely werent original.
So i think the head has been re-done in the last 100-150k.
Even then, it is still pretty clean haha
The chain/guides i just did last summer.
Cool, glad to know about the water pump.
Any sure-fire way to test it? There doesnt seem to be any play in the shaft/flange.

my motto has always been a "while you're in there" one...
how much is a new pump? is it worth it to you to spend the money and put a new one on it to have the peace of mind and KNOW that it's good?
looks like a pretty old H2O pump...

Theres none of that bluish white junk on the inside.
I might just go down to vatozone after i get paid tomorrow and buy one. Depends on what my paycheck looks like tomorrow though.

But I've found that if you pull the oil pan you won't mash up the HG and you can load it up with rtv.
Or if you use a thin piece of aluminum or metal you can put that between the hg and the timing chain cover and then slide it in without jacking up the hg either.
The hard part is getting it to seal again. I think I'm just going to pull the head and replace the HG and inspect my valves/pistons.

for comparison, I bought a hg and water pump (among other stuff, doing a full rebuild) at appleway yota recently for about 40 something ea, + tax. Spendy, but not much more then good aftermarket and much higher quality. My original aisin pump had over 200k and was still going good.

But I've found that if you pull the oil pan you won't mash up the HG and you can load it up with rtv.
Or if you use a thin piece of aluminum or metal you can put that between the hg and the timing chain cover and then slide it in without jacking up the hg either.

Pulled head, fixed everything and sealed it up tighter than a babys bottom..
and then.. it pissed coolant out the water pump.
Soooo Water pump time.
