Vacuum advance 84/85

I am a little confused here. I have an 84 Toyota with an 85 motor in it. Pickup 4WD. I took it to the shop to have them smog it and tighten the valves. When I dropped it off the vacuum line on the dizzy closest to the radiator had vacuum when I pulled it off to set the timing now the one closest to the valve cover does. It seems they switched the two should it be the other way around or is that the correct one? Which one, or should both, have a strong vacuum pull at all times, or at least at all times at idle?

Also should the timing still be set to 0 degrees because it's carbureted or 5 degrees because it's an 85?

0 because it's carb'd. The one to the ouside closest tot the rad should have vac pretty much at all times unless the motor is still cold. The on in the back is actually controlled by a BVSV.

So a little off topic then, what does BVSV stand for and is there a way to check it?

Yet again xxxtreme22r you have helped out when I was confused as hell. Plugged the hoses, set the timing, switched em around, took it for a test drive and presto no more back fire.

Although now it is idling at about 1100 rpms, I tried tightening/loosening the throttle positioning screw in hopes it would be an easy way to bring down the idle but no luck. I have an exploded view of my carb, the one you gave me a link to a month or so ago, but have no idea what screw to turn. Is there a single screw I turn to lower the idle? Or an easy way to do it?
