I was doing some work on the fuse box under the hood of my 89 4Runner and got the bright idea to try to pull the 80a main fuse. As I soon learned, it doesn't pull out (it's supposed to push out the bottom). In my efforts, I broke a lot of the black plastic casing around the 80a fuse.

So now the filament is exposed (covered of course by the cover of the fuse box).

My questions are:

1. Can I just leave it alone in its exposed condition?
2. If not, do I need to replace it? or
3. Is there some way to protect it short of replacing the whole thing?
4. If I have to replace it, how do I get access to the underside of it?

Replace it.... try a quick search here as this has been covered many times.

You can pick up that fuse at the local auto parts store....no need to go to Toyota for it.

 

Replacing the fuse is easy, but replacing the fusible link has been up for debate many times as to what you should use. Whether it be a real fusible link wire or a 6-8 gauge wire. But if you replace it with regular wire make sure it's at least an 8ga preferably a 6 ga wire. But this is only my opinion.
