I have a 2000 4runner Limited with the factory alarm. I wanted to add a remote start to it that will work with the factory remote, but the reception on the factory alarm is horrible. Anyone know any ways to boost the reception? It has always been like this ever since I got the truck three years ago.

i've tried to lengthen the grey antenna wire, but that hardly helped. i even tried attaching a wire to the diversity antenna to the grey antenna wire, but the results were less than thrilling. it extended the range by about 5x's. which is to say about 25 feet vs. 5 feet!

Anyways, my RS3000 is wwaaaaaaay worse than my former 99's RS3200. so if you have a 2000 w/ a RS3200, consider yourself lucky.

I'm not sure what kind of anteanna the factory alarm has but with my alarm in my accord I mounted a cell phone anteanna to the back window and soldered it to the anteanna. There was some impedance mismatching between the two but it did help with range. But I got the same range from soldered some 22 gauge onto the stock anteanna and running in up the side of the windshield. It's all about getting a better line of sight for the signal. It has a hard time going threw your doors and dash. I doubled the range by extending the anteanna. Good luck.

 

......or just get an aftermarket system with decent range.

What is your range?
My 99 4-button Keyless entry (no alarm) will work to about 50ft or so. One easy thing to try is a different remote, as yours could be slightly out of tune. Remotes are cheaply available on Ebay, just do a search for 'hyq1512y'. Avalons, 4runners, sequoias, etc. used these remotes.

You would have to go through the programming procedure as described in your Service (not owner's) manual.

 

I did the same thing as Bob, I maybe got an extra foot rang out of it!

I don't think its the antenna, its gotta be the brain itself.

I hold my remote as high as I can. And got the biggest antenna I could. The truck body was in the way so I removed it. Then the engine was in the way. I removed it too. Transmission -- gone.

Yeup, it works 'cause your body is turned into a passive radiator.... Basically your skeleton ends up "vibrating" at the same freq as the transmitter, and it handles the carrier modulation as well.

First of all, what frequency range does the alarm use? You could try buying an FM booster from radioshack and wiring that into your alarm. It's meant to increase FM range with your radio, but it might do the trick. I think they cost around $30. It helped a bit with my old radio.
