Hey everyone, recently I have decided to do a 3.4L swap in my 1990 Toyota Pickup. It is a 3.0L standard 5spd 4x4. I have acquired a donor 1996 (may be a 95.5, I could be wrong) 4Runner with a 3.4L, auto, 4x4 for $300 for the whole vehicle! Only thing is it has a blown head gasket, and the A/C does not work. Now, I am wondering how I would do this. If possible, I would love to throw that automatic transmission into my pickup, but if not I still love driving a stick. I was reading around and couldn't find anything to answer my question. How would I go about the ECU? Would I have to get an ECU that is a manual if I went that route? Or could I jump a wire or two to make it think that it is always in neutral? Or could I just buy new wire clips and make splice the wires going the right way? Is it even possible to put the automatic into my truck? I need to have as little down time as possible here, so any suggestions or advice is highly welcome.

 

Since you are in California jumping the neutral wire will not pass smog if you are trying to be legal.

I would suggest reading my thread as it covers what you want to do, both manual and auto. the auto route would be simple. the manual not so much but guys are getting away with drivers side drops in some areas.

YES!! Read and then read some more. I read every post here for months, had to figure out all the lingo such as COR, driver's drop, STA, etc.

All the stickies, Cadman's thread, Screamer, mine, and tons of others out there document the process fairly well. For California swaps, I tried to document every issue I had and again, Cadman's thread in the best on the internet for a clean 3.4 swap (minus the wiring part)

You will never understand everything just from reading but it'll get you with a plan and an idea of what you need.

If you do not know what a driver's side drop is, you have done nowhere near the research necessary to keep from driving your head into a wall repeatedly.
