home made shift knobs! what you guys think?

so ive been bored and we had some 1.75" aluminum laying around so i made some shift knobs.

dimensions:
1.5" OD, 4.5" and 2.25" L
3/4" radius .200" cut on top
30 degree taper on the longer one and 12 degrees on the shorter knob.
drilled and tapped.

+/- .002" on all specs.

so heres where i need your help! should i keep the longer one on my shifter and smaller knob on my transfer case or switch it around. the longer one when its on the shifter is long but shifts nice and almost seems better for dd. (sorry for the cell phone pictures)

OR

thanks for your help!

X2. The longer one seems just a little too long for the shifter...

those are awesome! I'd keep the longer one on the shifter and the shorter one on the transfercase shifter.

Do you remember what the threads were for the sticks? I always wanted to get some beer tap pulls and change out my shifters.

Those are awesome. I think I like the looks of the longer one on the Transfer case shifter, if it doesn't cause any clearance issues.

sweet knobs. yea, i could see some issues getting into 5th with the long knob on the t-case in 2H.

how much does it increase the throw distance for changing gears?

theres surprisingly no clearance issues with the larger knob. the throw is alittle more but i dont plan on racing anyone soon so its not a problem haha.

Bobby - my opinion? they look great. but if you dont have a body lift, i'd keep the longer one on the transfercase, and if you plan on putting a BL on the truck, then switch them.

The knobs look cool, I think I would keep the longer one on the trans.
Something else caught my eye also - I keep a roll of Gorilla tape in both of my trucks in the same spot yours is in. Nice multi-function cup holder / repair kit!

They look cool. Id keep the longer one on the transmission because Im tall and do not like to stretch to shift.

I agree with the long one on the trans instead of the case. I've been thinking since I got mine that I should lengthen my shifter so the knob is almost level with the top of the dash. Something about the hugely tall shifter I had in my '72 F150 just sort of appeals to me and is more comfortable.

Finding original gray transmission shifter knobs for a 1987 SR5 4Runner can be challenging, as they may be rare due to their age. You might want to try specialized auto parts shops, and online marketplaces for vintage car parts where fellow collectors may have leads or suggestions on where to find one.
