Hey guess, my first truck, its a 95 tacoma 2.7 and its got no get up and go, and its only getting like 13-14 MPG, i recently rebuilt the engine (needed a new piston crank and head) and suggestions?

Idle is good, and no codes?

Did it run sluggish before the rebuild?

 

idle is decent, and ya its been running progressivly better, and 1 cant get codes for it, no OBD1 code reader, 1 tried to jump terminals, but no lights flashed on the dash

 

but the ECL is on

 

oh and as far as before the rebuild i dont know, didnt have for long enough, i picked up it up it had rod knock, and needed a rebuild right away, and i dont know a whole lot, im 17 and i rebuilt it with my dad and we are both kinda stumped on whats causing this problem right now

 

You need an OBD 2 code reader.

It could be any number of things.

When the engine was put back together, was the cam timing confirmed to be correct? Rings gaped and placed correctly on the pistons? valve lash correct? Compression checked? Fuel Filter good? MAF and intake clean? There are numerous sensors that need to be hooked up and working too.

As was said, you need to find out what the trouble codes are.

well i was leaning to either cam timing or MAF i believe everything else was done correctly, thanks guys, i am planning on pulling it into my school auto shop when i start that cause i believe they have the right reader, i appreciate the responses

 

When my a/f sensor went bad I was getting horrible gas mileage, and the power wasn't there. Not sure if that could be the case with yours or not though.

 

thanks for all the replies guys, the biggest help here was that there was a obd2 under the dash, we pulled the code, got a misfire code and changed the distributor and wires, now we have good power, altough were still getting a misfire code, even though theres no feeling of misfire

 

so i got another question for y'all, how difficult is it to change a door? ive got a door shell, cause my passenger side door was all rusted to crap, the doors in my Tacoma are manual windows and manual locks

 

Did you clear the code? You just need to pull the negative battery terminal off for a few minutes.

You can do a door pretty easily.... Just transferring over all the parts? They just bolt in. I haven't done a window but I've done pretty much everything else.

 

sweet thanks, and as far as they code, yeah we erase with the reader, and when its idling its fine, but as soon as we take off, it pops up, after that, we erase it again and it doesnt come up again for the the rest of the time we are driving, its also throwing a
PO136, i think, and thats the o2 sensor code so i dunno if thats causing the misfire code

 

so the o2 sensor is taken care of, it had to be tightened, but its still throwing that misfire thing, its really weird, we put new plugs in when we rebuilt, and just put new wires and cap on, anybody got any ideas?

 

What plugs did you use? Also check the feul injectors, whatever misfire code you are getting check that cylinder for the bad injector.

 

injectors. Very similar to what mine was doing. Im a huge fan of the remaufacturing versus buying new by the way. 40k on me re0mans, and no troubles.

 

Thats because after you erase a code your ecu goes through a diagnostic process that takes several miles before the light will come back on. The problem is still there when your light is off, it's just going through its diagnostic program. Good luck chasing down those gremlins.
