Fronts lock up with hubs engaged

Got some great help with my last thread, hope somebody can help again. Search didn't help much, but maybe I used the wrong terms.

My front wheels lock up intermittently while I'm in 2wd with the hubs engaged. They freeze up solid enough that they'll skid on wet pavement and bring me to an abrupt halt. If it happens on snow, I just lose the ability to turn, is all . Needless to say, this sucks. Everything is groovy with the hubs disengaged.

I'll be renting a heated garage as soon as I get a day off so I can have a look underneath, what should I be looking at? I'll check the fluid in the diff and grease the zerks on the shaft, but if that isn't the trouble, it's going to be ujoints on the driveshaft or something broken in the diff, right? Any way to check the ujoints without taking everything apart?

Locks up with tcase in 2WD with the hubs engaged? Fine with hubs disengaged in 2WD and/or 4WD Hi/Lo? Both sides do this at the same time?

Have you disassembled the hubs lately?

I haven't noticed it while in 4Hi, but I haven't had a chance to get to a empty snowy lot to test it.

Both sides do this at the same time?
When they locked up on bare pavement, I was doing about 20 and didn't pull to either side while I was skidding, so I'm assuming both sides locked up. I don't know this for sure... again, no empty snowy lot.

Have you disassembled the hubs lately?
Yeah, I rebuilt both when I did my brakes last spring.

Sounds almost like the clutch pawl isn't fully rescinding when the dial is turned. Too much grease or big spring in upside down.

Did you rebuild with same parts or replace anything?

I got a tech write up how to disassemble/reassemble Aisins.

If your hubs are good and in 2WD with your tcase, then it sounds like diff trouble.

There are no u-joints in your front end, just the one that connects the drive shaft to the third member. Is it possible that when you rebuilt the hubs that you didn`t get them put back together right ?.

It's certainly possible. I worked from the FSM, but I could have missed something. I'm going looking for Wabs writeup on the hubs now.

Having trouble finding your writeup, my googlefu must be weak today.

I'm fairly certain I put them back together right, I was in and out of 4wd a couple times over the summer with no issues. Didn't spend a lot of time driving around streets with the hubs locked though.

I don't know that I'm understanding regarding the pawl... are we talking about the ring with the teeth on the outside that slides into the hub body when the dial is turned to "lock"? If that wasn't retracting all the way, then we'd be talking about remaining in 4WD when I turn the hubs to "free", right? Because that's not happening... I'm confused.

Thanks for the patience and help, I've never been a mechanically inclined person but I'm willing to learn!

I've never cracked it open, but to the best of my knowledge it's an open 7.5 diff with the stock 4.3 gears.

ETA - that's just perzaktly how I did it, 'cept the big spring on one might be backwards because I didn't know there was a difference. You say if that spring is backwards then the hub might not be unlocked when I think it is?

Lock one hub, and with the transfer case in 2H, get under the truck and manually turn the front DS.


The unlocked half shaft should turn free.
