More than one steering box ratio?

Hi,

I'd like to quicken up the steering on my 4Runner. With the US vehicles i've had in the past, you just nabbed a steering box out of various cars.

What are the options for 1st gens?

TIA!

I was wondering this as well...I need to rebuild/replace my leaking Steering box. It would be GREAT to get one with a quicker ratio.

I did crossover on my 85 and I used a box off a 87. I dont really like it. It takes alot of turns of the wheel to turn the tires.
Sorry I cant off much help, but I am interested in this too

Rumor is the newer style gearbox, 89-95, has a quicker turning ratio. It's a direct bolt-in swap.

86-88 on the left, 89-95 on the right.

To the OP, your 87 is a 1st gen. 90-95 are 2nd gen.

Fixt, thanks for pointing that out. Probably explains why my searches have been coming up short!

Is this mod worth it - that is going from a 1st gen steering box to a 2nd gen steering box for the quicker ratio. My rig is a weekend toy mainly for 4-wheeling. It seems that there would be a benefit if the ratio change is noticeable.

My original steering box has finally started to leak after 188k miles and now is the time to upgrade if its worth it functionally.

Any insight would be appreciated.
