88 4Runner No Charge/Battery light on start-up?

Ok here goes I had the brake/charge light flashing at the same time. So got a new Load Boss 170 amp Alternator and new battery and installed them. But my Alternator is not charging the battery.

Pulled the cluster out checked all the bulbs which were good. Checked all fuses and grounds which were all good. Now my Charge light does not light up at all when I fire up my truck. Does anyone know what this could be or what I should check next?

HELP !

As I understand it the voltage regulator is attached to the Alternator I also upgraded the charge wire to a 6 gauge wire.......so what the hell could be wrong ?

Do you have output at the Alternator??

How does this mate with the stock alternator harness??

Loose connections !! corroded connections they look ok to the eye but won`t conduct electricity Poor ground connections or cables

Bad alternator out of the box!!!

What have you checked??

The Alternator comes with a factory test sheet that shows it works. As for everything else I checked. The only only thing is the output at yhe Alternator my brother in-law blew my Amp Meter trying to rewire his landcruiser !

You need a meter to troubleshoot this.
They're cheap.

Are you sure the meter is bad or is it just the fuse that blew? Most meters have a fuse inside that will blow.

I have heard that the charge/battery light acts as the exciter for the alternator. I have checked and rechecked the bulb which is good but makes me wonder why it won't light up?

Check to see if you have voltage on terminal / pin L on your alternator( thats where the bulb ground is).If you do, then the ground is bad .If no voltage, work your way back along the circuit. See if you have voltage at battery side of your charge light. If you do then the problem is there. If not, there should be fuse between the light and the ignition switch. and a fuse or fusible link inbetween the switch and the battery.

Ha Ha Success !

When I was installing the new Alternator a couple of wire snapped out of the Alternator harness because the wires were so old and dry. Wired them up and we are now back in buisness !!!

Yipee !

It was quite the task considering it was -38 with the wind chill today......Gotta love livin North of 60 !

Thanks for all the help Guys !
