u-joints

hello everyone i had a quick question. my u-joints on my 1989 toyota pickup keeps going through u-joints like nothing. i was told its cause of the 4 inch lift and the 35in tires. so i was wondering what are some good u-joints to get? that wont go out so quick..

thanks

Have you had the dshafts lengthened properly? Pinion angle rotated? Added a rear double cardan joint?

Better ujoints probably won't fix your problem and is just a temp fix.

that angle isnt bad but if the first two pics were taken at the same time they are not lined up. buy greaseable ones and use a good syn. grease in there.

so them not being lined up would that make my u-joints go bad? cause eventually when i put in neutral or shift gears when driving you can hear my drive shaft clunk alot. with the diff tilting up should i have it just pointing straight?

and yes i just took both those

and thanks again for the help greatly appreciated

1. Not being lined up/out of phase = BAD. The u-joint yokes have to line up with each other. Liked razed is trying to explain. See pics below for more on that too.

2. Diff tilted up = GOOD, if you were using a double-cardan/CV on the transfer case end. It's looks about it's about as good as it gets there. You'd want the pinion pointed pretty much straight at the transfer case output shaft like that. However, since you're not using a double-cardan/CV, it's NO GOOD.

3. There's nothing more that can be done at this point to make the u-joints last longer, except to use a double-cardan joint/CV joint on the transfer case end(pic below). OR try and get the pinion angled at the same angle as the transfer case output shaft(pic above).

4. You can buy stronger u-joints. Precision Super Strength are awesome for the price.

Doesn't it vibrate like mad when your driving it on the highway/at highway speeds?

Mudhippy nailed it. I would be going to the junkyard to find a CV joint and have it welded onto your driveshaft. If you are concerned about cost pull a front IFS shaft and use the CV joint from it and replace your other u-joint with the used one from the other end. As far as u-joints go I have had better luck with used Toyota joints then aftermarket ones. This way you are only paying for a weld and a balance.
