4:56 = 31's

4:10s are for factory 29's

4:88 for 33's

5:29 for 35's.

okay so yeah, xtreme is right. completely. but most people just use the 4.10s for 31's. they feel fine like that to me. gotta remember it is a small suv with a 4banger in it lol.
i think some of the second or third gen 4runners and trucks came with 4.56's, could be wrong though

Likely find those in a '90s vintage pickup or 4Runner with 5-speed and the 31" factory tire option.

Absolutley :-)

I have 4.88 from a '94 pickup, and a '95 pickup in my '85 4Runner.

Front or rear axle on your '85 doesn't matter

You would need two rear 8inch thirds to regear your 85

4 or 6 don't matter
(V6 is same bolt pattern, spline count and location. Stronger that a 4 cyl with 4 pinion spider gears, instead of 2, and extra gussets built in to it's carrier housing)

If it has ABS, (like my diffs did), don't matter. Cut the cable, leave the plug on top of the diff.

Straight bolt in gear upgrade.

Only the V6 trucks with stock 31" tires and auto trans.

Please Note***
The Toyota factory 4.88 diff has an offset pinion gear. Still bolt in by all means, but the ring gear is thinner. Because of this, it will always be a 4.88 You cannot add aftermarket 5.29's later, for example.

One other thing, I have the so called "weak, thin ring gear" factory 4.88 diffs in my 85 4Runner. LSD in the rear, LockRite in the front. 35" tires, tons of wheeling with 4.7's, never an issue.

Ive run everything from 29" tires to 37" tires on my 4.56 V6 3rds and just have to change your driving style to accomidate I got mine out of 2 early 90s V6 4runners that had door code G254 4.88s have gear code G144 and 4.10s have G294 4cyl codes are the same but have a 2 at the end rather than a 4 2=2pinion 4=4pinion

just to clearify
4.10 = G294
4.56 = G254
4.88 = G144

Assuming 2 '95 rear diffs, then yes.

No. Just the same ratio. Also check 1994 V6 pickup with auto trans, and 31" tires. Those are also 4.88, just check to be sure.

Gearcode G144
