trouble setting timing - please watch vid

'85 pickup, rebuilt lower end and put a new cast head on @ 276k, not quite a year ago, now at 280k.

Anyways, ever since I put it all back together, i've had a feeling that something ain't right with the timing. As you can see in my vid hopefully, with the distributor adjusted all the way to the max retard limit, and vac. lines disconnected, the notch on the crank pulley wont indicate below 5 deg. BTDC. (should be at 0)

The motor runs fine, smooth idle and all, but seems to ping excessively when under load, bogged down, etc. (If i unplug the vac. lines it doesn't ping, but the only downside is it lags in acceleration only when engine is cold. Otherwise, normal, plenty of power when warm. When i run the truck without the vac lines hooked up, I set the timing mark between 8 and 12 deg. for smoother operation)

Can someone verify that normally the correct position of the distributor be somewhere between the max. limits, and that physically one should be able to adjust the mark to and beyond, (after) 0 deg? perhaps something's wrong on mine?

Moving the dist. worm gear tooth over one notch doesn't help.. runs rough

thanks.

without watching video it seems as though your distributor is 1 tooth off. Especially since you cannot get it to 0 degrees which should be almost in the middle of the adjustment "window" of the hold down.

Regardless if it runs rough or not, it should indicate 0 degrees. If it runs rough at 0 degrees you got other problems then the timing. Possibly the cam timing off 1 tooth since you had the head off.

Might want to edit that video mods are not gonna like the end of it.

I think to install the distributor correctly you set your motor at TDC on #1, insert distributor with the rotor pointing at the 12 O-Clock possision. Make sure your adjusting slot is centered with the hold down bolt hole in the head. Push the distributor in straigt and the rotor should come around and point at the vacuum advance. You should now have full range of timing adjustment.

If he cant get it to run past 5 then his timing might be off between the crank and head, no matter how far you turn that ditributor. Adjustable timing gears are wounderful for problems like that.

^^ I have my block shaved 10 thous not using adj. cam gear and I can get mine to 0. And if the crank to cam timing is off enough to not allow the dizzy to be set correctly, that thing probably would not run at all.

Found out the hard way that not all timing cam gears are the same. Solid gears. SO adjustable it is.

there is only one aftermarket non-stock style cam gear available for the toyota 22 motors and it happens to be adjustable.
