transmission service questions

I have done some searching around on a few different forums and have not been able to find exactly what I need. I am having my transmission fluid changed (not flushed) tomorrow and I was wondering exactly how much oil I will need to replace it. Its a 2000 4runner, 2wd, 3.4L. I went to my local auto parts store and they pulled up my vehicles info, which said I needed 2.1 quarts of Castrol Dexron VI. Does this seem right or will I need more? Also, would you guys recommend replacing the filter as well, if there is one?? Thanks in advance

yes replace filter and it may take 3.5 quarts

pretty simple, measure what comes out of it, put that much back in.

I wouldn't put the same amount in that came out, here's why, the fluid coming out will most likely be at or near operating temperature. Which means since transmission fluid expands more than oil does and you put the same amount in that came out it will be too much.

Fill with about a quart or so less than what came out or just fill gradually till you get to the middle of the XXXX mark on the dipstick. DO NOT fill to the top of the XXXX or lines which ever yours has. If you do once it warms up and the fluid expands it will be over full.

3.5 qts is about right, give or take 1/2 a quart. Check the fluid level, when hot, after about 100 miles.

Any Dex VI brand is good. I have had great results using Castrol Import ATF.

If the tranny is shifting well, I'd pass on changing the filter (yes there is one).
