1984 Carb intake/header to 22re?
Got an '84 4runner I use in the rocks, Carb'd 22r with a header and an MSD 6-AL, works exactly as I want (angles, uphill, downhill, all great
). The only problem is it is about to throw a rod and is pretty much toast.
Not looking to change to EFI, too much work (and wiring and computers, don't trust 'em), I want to drop in a newer long block and be done with it so I can get back to the rocks. I can find 86 and later 22RE's all day, having trouble finding an 84 and older 22r.
Can I reuse my intake and header from the 84 on a later 22RE block? Do the later blocks even have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump?
Any info appreciated.
Also - pic for the carb haters proving yes it runs quite well at angles:

years are not compatable. will not work as a direct swap. the head will bolt up however the problem will become an issue with the timing chain because of different deck heights of the block and the fact the 84 has domed pistons whereas the later 22re will have flat top pistons.
now as far as just the header and intake portions, I believe it will work.

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
Well, EFI will not stumble on steep inclines. And the EFI system is a highly dependable one that's easy enough to trouble shoot.
EFI cylinder walls last longer and you get more power and MPG...
The best bet for a conversion is the old Celica Supra (I believe) b/c it has a super simple closed loop (IIRC) EFI that does not have a O2 sensor (IIRC) and consequently about half the wires of a standard RE...
Again that's IIRC and not 1st hand knowledge...
If I want an EFI, I buy one.
And if I get a carb truck and want more power, I get a 20/22R Hybrid motor.
