How to find axle nut

I need help.
I have found tons of good write ups on how to replace the cv half shaft but they all skip over walkthrough on getting to the axle nut. most just start with the axle nut.

how do i remove this darn thing, ive been hitting it and kicking it for days now.

I have ADD, 90 4runner, auto, cv joints

what exactly are you doing to the truck cv's or brakes and rotors/bearings?
if it's cv's the only nut you need to remove is the 12 or 14mm one on the end of the exle shaft and then the clip in the groove right? If you're removing the whole hub assembly to replace the rotors then you'll need a 54mm socket. post a pics of the offending nut.

Remove the dust cap from the drive plate.
Remove the bolt from the end of the CV axle shaft.
Remove CV.

aaah what you have there are cone washers keeping that little cover in place (at least that what they are in the manual hubs) same thing though. here's a good write up on the process but basically you'll hit the side of the assembly witha brass drift while rotating it like one hit move a little hit move you get the idea. use some pb blaster on the washers as well to convince them out. http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/t...ent-18322.html that is for a tear down of the hubb assemble for bearings but covers the cone washers as well. If youre unsure as to wich part are the washers look at the hub and where you removed the 10 or 12mm bolts and notice that there isn't just stud there but a washer or ridge that's them they are cone shaped and take some time getting them out.

my bad ardent nailed it so apparently you don't even need to mess with the whole cover and all. He's right though just remove the dust cap. the way i was saying was much more involved and probably a bit of over kill

He shouldn't have to remove the drive plate to replace the CV. There should be a bolt with a washer under the dust cap that once removed will alow the axle shaft to be pulled out.

There also shouldn't be any snap rings or anything else holding it in with the ADD setup (at least there weren't on mine).

you have more experience with it ardent i'm used to the manual hubs and i don't even think you have to remove the washers when replacing those either. Just my luck i try to get waaaay more involved in a job than needed and take apart the whole vehicle to fix one busted bolt or part. Thanks for getting that straightened out ardent.

Yup. The Gold thing.

I just use a flat head screwdriver at the seam with a few light taps. It will come off.

I will just need to be more determined with this thing. Thanks guys.

last time i needed a inner boot, couldnt get it off so i just disassymbeld the inner part while connected to truck. that was challenging but seemed easier then prying off this darn cap.
