87 22R power upgrades?

Hey I recently (july) bought an 87 4x4 pickup with a 22R for $1350.00. It has 81, 000 original miles on it. I have had no problems with it till recenlty. Had some over heating problems which turned out to be the head gasket... Im bout to finish fixin that. But I was wondering what kind of power upgrades you would reccomend. I am now a freshman in college so money is kind of tight. so cheapish upgrades would be best. Also I want to put a small lift on this eventually, what lift and tire combo would you reccomend. I would like to try and stay close to the mpg im gettin right now (24-26 highway, 21 around the mountains by my house). Any suggestions would be great, thanks

definatley get a weber, possibly a cam and header too. but if you want to spend money get a built head as well.
or build a hybrid with a 22r block and a 20 r head

I plan to get a header and exhaust soon, hopefully by summer. What would the 20r head do for me? and also the weber carb? When I had the over heating problem I bought a new head. There was nothing wrong with the one I had but it needed a valve job, and it needed to be resurfaced so i bought one that was already redone with what i needed. it was the same cost. so I won't be buyin a new head soon, Im just wonderin what the 20r head would do for me.

the 20r head will give you higher compression but you can only use it on a pre 85 block

oh ok. what type of header would be the best? I heard to stay away from pace setter headers. so im going to avoid those but what other types of headers would be reccomended? also i have seen 22R's with the chrome open style air filter. where could I find one? I haven't been able to find one yet. any suggestions?
