think it will leak/ Time chain cover

alright so i had to get another timing cover from the salvage yard. got it on the truck and buttoning things up. and dont ask me how but i broke that hiddein bolt under the distributor gear. i did it with a 1/4'' ratchet so i dont know how it broke.

what are the chances that it is going to leak oil?

Also, when i did the timing chain i didnt think to take note of where the distrubutor gear was before i removed it. id this going to be a crap shoot? or can someone tell me wear the gear should be when the engine is at tdc?

You need to give us more information for us to help. Assume this is a 22RE?

You didn't change the chain - you just replaced the timing cover, and while doing so, broke the "hidden" bolt up top, and lost timing on your distributor gear because you don't recall how it lined up?

If that's the case, are you going to try and replace the broken bolt (I would try and back it out with one of those bits)?

Its a 22r. i put on a new timing set. the old cover was pretty worn. but im wondering what my chances are of it leaking if i leave it as is. i dont want to pull the timing cover yet again for like the 4th time

I don't think you need to take the cover off again to fix the one bolt, or to fill the oil pump bolt with RTV.

You can access the broken bolt with just the valve cover and distributor off and the cam bolt off (be careful so the cam gear doesn't slip off when you take off the distributor drive gear!!).

This is the bolt you broke, right?

yep that would be the one! autozone sells something similair to those, i just hope its long enough to use without taking the head or timing cover off again

The engine should already be set to TDC so just set the rotor in the distributor to the 1 and you should be good. Your going to have to play with it once you get it started.

I've never needed any fancy tools to remove broken bolts, aside from an easy out. Just grab a good, sharp center punch and put a divot in the center of the bolt, drill it, then you could do exactly what's shown above, or use an easy-out.

If it's a large broken bolt, I usually just weld a nut onto it. The heat from welding helps loosen it, too.

Use a fresh Valve cover gasket. That will help with the oil leakage. I have to re-do mine because Troy decided to use RTV instead of a new gasket. Not that RTV won't work, it will, but frankly I like the idea of a valve cover gasket instead. (I have a small leak snow)

well to my suprise it didnt leak! but im still going to fix it. i have a coolant leak however and its not from the water pump

Just because it doesn't leak buckets doesn't mean it won't leak, especially once warmed up. If you snapped off the bolt, that timing cover will leak.

bro i drove it good and hard and it doesnt leak oil yet.. but like i said im gonna fix it anyway.

also ive got a bad coolant leak. first it was the water pump so i took that off and put a new gasket on. now its leaking somewhere else.

and when i first started it up the came from the exhaust. what does it mean?
