1988 22re idling problems

Im new with this site and how everything works,
I have a 1988 toyota with a rebuilt 22re, i put the motor in and got it running had trouble figuring out the timing and how and what to set it at. I got the timing set at what I think it should be, and now the idle wont come down to 750 rpm (under the hood thats what it said it should be) it idles at 1100 and bounces up to 1200 1250 rpms and i dont know whats causing it. When I start it up when its cold the high idle kicks in and runs fine but when it gets warmed up it starts bouncing up and down. so any advice would help and would be great thanks

Does it only bounce when the breaks are applied? Try turning the idle screw down.

I had the same problem with mine. Under the throttle body that is a value with two coolant lines. one line, one out. The line in comes straight off of were the thermostat is located. What happened with mine was that there was a block in that part of the system that stopped the throttle body from being able to tell what temperature the engine was at. The result was the surging idle effect your described. To fix it I had to do an extensive coolant flush, that included taking the hoses off of the value and blasting them out with water. Hope this helps.
