frame recall + totalled 98 Taco
#1
i have (had) a 1998 PreRunner V6 that got t-boned last week and spun over a curb disconnecting the drive shaft, right passenger leaf spring, and front driver side wheel. all those parts are snapped. my fiance was driving the truck when the accident happened and she came out OK, luckily spinning into the grass on her side of the road instead of getting rammed into oncoming traffic.
i went to look at the my truck the next day and found it in worse shape than i thought it would be. i took pics and took out my belongings (minus the full tank of gas purchased one minute before the wreck, and the new battery installed 20 minutes before the wreck!). something i noticed was rust on the leaf spring where it cracked off the frame. not sure if it was b/c the interior metal was exposed and had rusted overnight, or if it was just ready to pop. there were also patches of rust all over the bottom of the truck and especially where the sidestep clamped to the frame.
i've been keeping an eye on the belly of the truck the past couple years after hearing of the recall frame thing, but never thought my truck was bad enough considering it had lived all it's life in Texas's salt-less roads. but, i moved to Connecticut in 2007 going through three winters so far.
my question is: is it worth it to have the dealership look at the truck in case it falls under the recall? will they tell me to get lost since the truck is busted? i've never had to deal with an insurance settlement involving a totalled car (assuming they total it), but i get the feeling that i'll get as little as they can possibly give me. i may be wrong; don't know. i really could use the greater of the funds to go towards a proper baby hauler.
any input's appreciated. thanks!
