Question Stock 3rd gen w/larger tires = failed inspection??

Okay, i've got a problem here. I was going to order some 265/75/16 cooper STT's for my stock 98 limited 4runner. As of now it has 265/70/16 BFG KO's and it's all rotted/cracked. So it wont pass the inspection . Apparently this guy at the counter at the garage said that they can order the tires but wont put them on and slap on the new inspection sticker. Just because of the abs breaks or something like that?

Can someone please fill me in on this matter?

Thank you!

maine. I went to foshays, which is in augusta, maine. look them up at donfoshays dot com

He's the only one who gave me a deal (best deal around town) 1,000$ just for the STT's and have it mounted/balance. That's with the 265/70/16.

Cooper stt's in that size can be found for around 200 a tire and get them mounted and balanced at walmart for 10 bucks a tire. Looking at 900.00 bucks for your new tires. Just saw a set on ebay for 885.00 with free shipping. 40 bucks later and some time at wally world and your set and still under 1000.00. get the inspection at another place or find out exactly why they will not pass it. The whole abs brake thing just sounds fishy to me.

I am curious do you also have a brake issue??

What do tires have to do with ABS brakes.

Being in Pa I of course have no idea what the code is up there in Me but here in Pa last I heard ABS brakes are not needed as long as the brake system meets all the other requirements

Why would you buy tires if your vehicle does not pass inspection something is missing here.

If your vehicle needs something else of course it can`t get inspected till all defects are repaired. If only the tires were the problem perhaps they have a company policy if I vehicle has left the property it needs to be reinspected just to protect their license.

Totally enough information to go label the guy a crookster!

No, really, how about going online and downloading the DOT guidelines for the inspection? That information is not secret.

What was their explanation? Why speculate when you can get an actual answer from them, they have to have a valid reason for failing the truck.

unless your state has some sort of law regarding tires sticking outside the wheel well.s it shouldn't matter what tire size you put on that thing. Unless of course the tires size itself puts you out of the rid height requirement. but I doubt that's gonna happen unless your running 40's lol.

I had a similar problem with trying to inspect our BMW, the guy was gonna fail mine, because the SRS airbag light flashes. I said show me in the book where that is even an inspection item. Tried giving me a BS excuse saying that since the light flashes they don't know if the air bag will go off by itself for no reason. I said do you think I am stupid or something like that. lol. Have you seen the brand new front end suspension and brand new brakes on this thing? yeah that was MY handy work, I know my way around cars. lol. I think they tried doing this to me because they have some stupid rule if it fails inspection you have to give them another $40 if those repairs are not done in that shop. I said even if the ABS light was on you can't fail it for that either because ABS is not a requirement on any vehicle, it's on supplemental safety. Brakes still work as they should with faulty ABS.

Needless to say 15 minutes later I walked outta there with the inspection slapped on.

Go to another shop. Or get him to mount your tires and take it elsewhere for the inspection. Technically, yes, larger tires can give abs problems. The sensor on each wheel senses the speed of each tire and uses that information to determine whether a tire is slipping. I'm pretty sure most systems use the difference between each of the tires to determine whether any one is locking up, but then again an abs system can also keep all four from locking up, so it may use the speedometer as a reference somehow. But different tires sizes throw your speedometer and odometer off by various amounts. Your tire size gain is very minimal, and I'm sure you will not even notice it.

Ok,I'm not clear;idd it not pass because of the condition of the tires? You said they were rotted and cracked.
