Hi. I finally got me a 83 4x4. Drove it from GA to WI. Runs like a champ. All stock motor and tranny, just rebuilt. I started with 87 octane but with 93 octane I can drive up hill like 62mphs on the freeway. 3' lift, 4.56 3rds, 4.70 worm gear, 32s.

Ok. I am loving the truck. A lot of eye attention on the drive up and around the Wisconsin area.

I read somewhere that this 5 speed tranny has a weak point. Should I be worry about it?

Should I worry about the axle (I read they where strong)?

I just want to keep the motor stock, maybe cams. I would like to convert to a 22rte with the turbo 5 speed if I ever swap motor.

 

dern nice 1st gen!!!!!! has it ever been wheeled? that thing needs some dents and scuffs! youll have no problems with them axles.

L series transmission is not the strongest but fine for DD and light wheeling.
If you convert to an R series trans they are 5" or so longer and you will need to move the crossmember back and shorten front driveshaft and lengthen the front.

Axles are fine, the 84-85 front axle is actually stronger than the 81-83 front axle by virtue of the longer truss

 

I was thinking about taking it out mudding/wheeling but I don't know anywhere here. I don't plan on doing anything much yet. Just basic things. The bed has a bubble rust here and there underneath the paint. I want to make those my priorities. Sand off some surface rust and paint them underneath.

I am not going to go with a bigger lift or bigger tires. I can barely fit the garage due to height. It's a Pro Com 3" right now. Heard they are ok. I want to go with a full marlin 3" lift.

It's already 4.56 with 32s. From reading I don't want to regear to 33s. I think the turbo motor might be ok as 33s with a 3" lift might still fit the garage.

Side note here. Would the stock tranny and axle hold fine with just the 22rte motor swap? If I am in 4x4 can I still do 60mph (is there like a 45mph limit or something)?

 

Stock tranny and axles will be fine for the turbo motor and 32's or 33's, your gears will be fine with 33's as well

 

congrats! Not too many original terra cotta painted rigs left out there..they only offered that color in '83. Treat her well.

I was trying to find out the paint color on it. Now that you mention it, anyone knows the paint code for it? It's been repainted.

 

the paint code is 3A7..it should be on the fire wall on the VIN plate at the bottom...

I ran 91 in my truck for over a year with no ill effects.

 

I paid 5500. I think it was a little high but I am happy with it. For 4-5 grand here, there was a lot of rusted toyota trucks. So I decide since I have to drive south anyways, get a 1st gen. Miles is at 212k.

I really don't see why 91/93 octane would hurt.

I'm a little worry when winter comes I have to adjust the carb and this is the 1st time I've own a carb. I figure it can't be that hard.
