Well I'm seriously thinking about going to 35's on my 3rd gen 4runner. I have looked at every tire I can think of and have decided I either want to try out the Firestone Destination MT or the BFG KM2. I have run the MTZ for a few years now and like it but want to try something different. And before anyone else chimes in I also considered the MTR and MTR with Kevlar.

Price for Firestone Destination MT after mount and balance $952.76
Price for BFGoodrich T/A KM2 after mount and balance $1199.76

If they were priced the same I'd go with the KM2's but at almost a $250 difference it's a hard decision for me. I primarily drive on the road but I like to wheel at least every other weekend. I live in Arkansas so we have our share of dirt, rocks, and mud.

Give me your thoughts on these tires. "If you were in my shoes what would you do."

 

Install the BFG KM2's on on my 1st Gen earlier this year and the work GREAT! I just got back from 2 weeks of wheeling on and near the Fordyce Trail in Northern California. Good on the rocks and on the highway.

 

i just found on 4wheelparts.com that i can pick up a set of 35x12.50x15's for 780, im sure mounting and balencing will be another 100 or so.

 

Goodyear Kevlar MTR. They run large. KM2's run small.

Yep. In comparison.
I saw a 285/75/16 Kevlar MTR right next to a 315/75/16 KM2... The MTR Kevlars looked just as tall.

 

Alot depends on what tire pressures you run...... If you run real low tire pressures the tires will be shorter than than someone running higher pressures for highway use.

 

what kind of off roading you do?
I ran the KM2 on my pickup in 35s for about a year but i was more into mudding. and honestly they didnt clean out worth a dang. I also had the original KM on my old blazer and the KM2 cant even touch the old style!!! My $0.02

 

Don't like that they are directional, not 100% I like the look, and they are comparable in price to the KM2. So I'd still have to decide between them and the Destination MT.

 

More rocks and dirt than anything. We have our fair share of mud here but I try to steer clear of it as much as possible.

 

Then the KM2 might work out for you... dont get me wrong they look good and rode smooth, but poor in mud.
Also the goodyear kevlar is an A symetrical tire which means it can only be mounted one way not matter what side of the vehicle it is on.

 

the km2's are awesome, truer to there actual height then most tires other then the mtr, but they're lighter so you do better overrall. i just went into some of the gooest mud i've ever done and there worked great, i actually aired down though. great sidewall strength. my favorite tire for all around. i've done everything from heavy rock to deep mud to snow with them. about $190 per tire is average for online prices.

 

the 35 inch km2 is 34.8 inches tall and the new mtr in a 35 in is 34.8 i just checked their websites. so they run the exact same for height

 

Personally, I've come to the conclusion firestones suck. And if you drive the thing regularly, they're LOUD. May as well go with a set of swampers... They do WAY better in all categories off road, and don't make any more noise.

Personally, if I had to pick ANY mud tire on the market (short of a swamper) for overall performance it would easily be one of two choices. Either the Interco Trxus MT, or the ProComp Xtreme Mud Terrain. The X-Terrain rocks too, but is a bit too aggressive for daily if you ask me (and I dont like directional tires).

Either one of those two would eat the BFG or the Firestone for lunch in every category.

 

Go do some actual searching. Such as reading reviews about each of the tires. It's not new for a tire company to LIE about how tall the tires actually are.
Again. The KM2's run small and the MTR's run large.

My Destination MTs have been really good to me. I have 33's on 15x8 steel rims. I've aired down between 5-10lbs in the snow without incident. The sidewalls are really strong. Thicker than the old BFG MTs don't know about KM2s though.

I have been eyeing the MTR w/kevlar though, might go that direction next. Just for something new.

 

That's funny, I am going to be doing just the opposite of you - replacing my Destination MT's with Mickey Thompson MTZ's. My Destinations were great, good wear, and quiet. I just want something with a little more siping for the winter months.

 

Go with KM2's dude - they were AWESOME on my 1st gen.

I vote Km2s. I run them in a 33x10.50, my buddy runs them in a 31x10.50 and my brother runs them in a 32x11.50. we do light rock/dirt trails all day long and we have yet to encounter any problems.

 

i dunno if the firestone that you got the quote from does this, but it may help swing your decision...i've been looking for tires this summer and when i talked to our local Firestone, the rep said that anyone who either already has or signs up for a Firestone Card gets a "buy 3 get 1 free promotion" any time of year. pretty sweet deal if you ask me. guess that's why i get my lifetime alignments from them. i'm pretty much sold on them only i really want km2s because they come in a 10.5" width for the 33s.
