Guys, I keep throwing a P0440 code and am coming up short as to why. I know it's either exhaust, emission circulation, or the gas cap. Has anyone else had this issue. It comes on once or twice a week until I clear it.

90% of the time when ONLY that DTC shows up, it's a leaking gas cap.

 

Well I replaced the gas cap and still getting a p0440 and a p0442 code, when I have some time I'll take it all apart and check it out. I thought about the recent last 13k motor swap and wondered if something may be loose on the motor side, though I never smell fuel. Any ideas?

I get P0440, P0442, and P0446 every week or so. It's been going on for at least six months, so I just keep my code reader in the truck and clear the damn things.

I think my issue may have to do with one of the solenoids near the charcoal canister.

Yeah my Runner throws this code all the time and I've replaced the gas cap and checked the charcoal canister hoses and all seems to be well and I don't smell fuel so I've just been clearing it.

 

I don't think clearing it in necessarily the best thing, as it isn't fixing a common problem. I'm guessing toyota may be able to better determine what is wrong with a thorough analysis?

I think it's gas cap ONLY if you're getting PO442 or PO446...

Evap codes are a PITA, good luck!

 

Some folks have gotten P0440 codes due to a rusty filler neck. P0446 should be either the VSV's or the sensor itself. FSM has trouble shooting procedure.

 

I replaced the gas cap and made sure the fuel lines were good and tight, now I'm getting PO440, PO442, and PO446. Whaaaaaaaaaaa.

Replaced the VSV and what do you know two tanks later the P0440 came back, WTF? I'm guessing my only options now is the Charcoal canister?

P0440 large leak. You actually got the screws out of the Vacuum Shut Valve (canister shut valve) without breaking them off? Is the valve is on the side of the evap canister? You are a god. Without smoke it's tough. All of the time it gets a canister, I don't even attempt to remove screws.

 

Yes the screws while tight weren't rusted or corroded and proved rather easy to remove once the (4) bolts that hold the canister were removed. It was a pain in the ass but not impossible. I'm wondering if the P0440 is a canister or something else, I mean whats left? I did the fuel cap, the vsv ...... now what?

My 2001 is also throwing out a P0440 code. Gas cap replaced but I really dont want to mess with troubleshooting. Does anyone know how to bypass the system so the CEL doesn't come on and I can pass emissions? I know that sometimes resistors can be put in place of a sensor to trick the ecu. I would like to do something like this so I never have to worry about the evap system again.

 

I replaced my Charcoal canister out of desperation and the code is gone, the gas cap keeps throwing the lights on occasion but its nothing like have the CEL and vsc lights on for over 100K.

I've been dealing with this BS for more than two years, so last week I installed a new Toyota gas cap. No change. Check Engine/VSC/TRAC lights back on shortly thereafter.

I have a ScanGauge permanently mounted in the truck, so I can erase these codes on the fly. Unfortunately, my emissions test is due by middle December and there is no way I'll pass with the frequency that these codes appear.

So today I bit the bullet, hard, and ordered a charcoal canister assembly from Camelback Toyota for $327, shipped. My local dealer, from whom I've purchased parts for 12+ years, wanted $500. Jesus.

I keeping my fingers crossed that this solves the issue...

My brand-spanking-new charcoal canister arrived yesterday. I intend to install it tomorrow...
Over the last few weeks I've installed a new gas cap, replaced the failing gasket between both cats, replaced the o2 sensor, and replaced the air/fuel sensor (or whatever the one in front of the cats is called).
I hope this alleviates the issue.

I spent about an hour this morning installing the new charcoal canister (part# 77740-35482). I backed the truck onto a set of ramps and removed the spare to gain access. There are four 12mm bolts to remove, one electrical connection, and five hose connections. The three hoses that face forward were a bit tricky to access, but all in all, not a terribly difficult job.

I kept the battery disconnected during the work and then drove the truck around the block. For the Hell of it. I guess I'll need to drive it a week or so in order for the readiness monitors to reset.

After three years of intermittently getting P0440, P0420, and P0446, I hope that this is it for awhile. Within the last few weeks, I've also replaced both exhaust sensors, an exhaust gasket, and the gas cap.
